The MK60 Standalone ABS system by Racing Harness Technologies (RHT) is a bespoke made to order system. The system is designed to be as plug and play as possible but it does require some advanced mechanical understanding and skills. Depending on current order load, delivery time can be be between 6-8 weeks so please plan your project build accordingly.
The MK60 is unique among off the shelf ABS units (outside of high cost units from Bosch) in its ability to operate in a truly standalone mode. All of its sensor data is managed within the unit and its diagnostics are performed via a dedicated OBD2 port without the need for other gateway modules or the ECU like is the case with other modern systems. The MK60 is able to monitor its own sensors and regulate wheel slip without integrating into a car's existing electronics.
Due to the onboard pumps in the MK60 there is no requirement for a pre-charge pump which are sometimes seen on other ABS systems (such as those on the pre-2003 E46 M3).
3-CHANNEL VS 4-CHANNEL ABS
4-channel ABS systems (like the MK60) regulate all 4 calipers independently from one another compared to earlier 3-channel ABS systems which regulated only the front calipers independently and linked the rears to a single outlet. This is particularly important in cases of trail braking and corner exit where 3-channel systems can causes issues when trying to regulate slip on one rear wheel and disturb both.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
The MK60 is both simple and yet complex at the same time. We have assembled a list of FAQs to help with the most common questions.
The MK60 can be fitted in a wide variety of cars both BMW and otherwise. Depending on your application, some wiring and plumbing is required but with the use of a standalone ABS wiring harness the installation can be streamlined. The key items required for installation are:
- Wheel speed sensors (one per wheel)
- Pressure sensors (measuring master cylinder outlet pressures for the front and rear outlets)
- Yaw/Acceleration sensor
- Signal to the ABS system that the brake pedal is pressed (this is typically accomplished using whatever controls the brake lights)
- 12v power
When you order a custom harness we will ask you to provide lengths to each wheel speed sensor from your MK60 ABS unit along with an indication of what sensor you’ll be using. The pressure sensor runs will be 36”, power and ground will be 36”, and the yaw sensor will be 72”.
DATA ACQUISITION INTEGRATION
The MK60 is capable of providing data to external systems such as the AiM MXL series of data loggers, AiM EVO data loggers, MoTeC, etc. The Motorsport harness can be configured to offer a variety of outputs to suit the application.
RACE MAP PROGRAMMING
The MK60 in it's base configuration offers exceptional ABS performance and has been proven to work on a wide variety of applications. The MK60 is used extensively in its base configuration on track cars equipped with high performance street tires and race cars running both DOT-R and full non-DOT slick tires.
However, for users looking for professional motorsport level performance and fine tuned mapping the MK60 can be re-mapped with a TEVES/Conti race program. This map is developed around your specific chassis and takes into account parameters such as weight, track width, caliper piston size, etc.
Our general recommendation is for users to start with the base MK60 map and see if it fits your application. We can assist with sourcing a "map-able" MK60 so that you have the option to upgrade as desired.
SOURCING THE RACE MAP
3DM and RHT do not perform this remapping service. However, we are happy to connect our clients with a trusted vendor that does. Please email or call if this an upgrade you'd like to discuss.
